AFSIM and MDS
MDS Systems Engineering
What we do
Applying in-depth research, development, and operational experience MDS offers US Federal and International governments a unique resource in the quest to conceptualize, design, and economically deploy terrestrial and space based systems.
Our diverse background includes participation on programs performing Modeling and Simulation (M&S) applying various systems such as AFSIM, support of UAV research and development, optical systems analysis, research in the areas of directed energy and space awareness, and survivability analyses of NC3 facilities.
MDS, has supported Navy, Air Force and Army programs involved with research, systems design and engineering, and operations across a host of mission objectives. Programs include:
AF: Next Generation Interceptor (NGI) (2023)
AF: Micro-Satellite Systems (2023)
Joint: Wargaming M&S/Analysis (2023)
Navy: Naval Research Lab. (NRL) R&D
AF AFSIM based M&S of ISR/EW Sensor
AF AFSPC Wargamming/Exercises Support

News & Publications
3-5-2020 Navy: Naval Research Laboratory (NRL) MDS Awarded Atmospheric R&D Contract
MDS, as a subcontractor to Praxis Corp, supports NRL’s Remote Sensing Division on a project covering such diverse areas as Upper Atmospheric Remote Sensor Engineering Efforts , and Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR)/Interferometric Synthetic Aperture Radar (ISAR) Systems R&D. This work includes R&D in such areas as: spectral imaging for the remote sensing of coastal water and of land surfaces; passive polarimetric microwave sensing of the ocean surface (Windsat, APMIR); passive near ultraviolet, visible, near-infrared and passive microwave sensing of the atmosphere; bistatic reflectometry; synthetic aperture radar (SAR); radio, IR and optical astronomy; passive sensing of direct and diffuse near-surface sunlight.
4-10-2018 MDS Rated in Top Percentile by Customers
MDS is pleased to announce it has been rated by its customers in the 95th percentile for quality of service to include 100% for reliability (based on an independent D&B survey). MDS currently executes multiple Defense Priorities and Allocations System Program (DPAS) rated programs and is an ITAR compliant firm. Additionally, the firm maintains a DCMA/DCAA approved accounting systems. MDS is a Veteran Owned Small Business with locations in the Washington DC area and Dayton Ohio.
Hypersonic Technologies 2023
MDS supports the development of hypersonic systems to include work in the areas of GN&C modeling and simulation, GPS denied engineering, related aerodynamic/engine/airframe data analysis, and propulsion/launch I&T.
NASA TRMM Atmospheric Satellite
MDS supported the development of the ground support, data repository systems and atmospheric precipitation algorithm needs for the Tropical Rainfall Measurement Mission (TRMM) NASA Earth Observation (EOS) program.

Service Areas
1-15-22 Guidance, Navigation and Control (GNC): Space Systems
MDS has begun support in Huntsville, Al, on the M&S and systems engineering of advanced GNC capabilities for extra-terrestrial missile applications. The work includes R&D and M&S of advanced GNC nuclear survivable capabilities from conceptional development, through M&S and HWIL prototyping/test. Engineering encompasses simulation of gyros, accelerometers and IMU and related integration algorithm design. This is a 3-5 year program in support of a US DoD modernization effort.
Advanced Framework for Simulation, Integration and
Modeling (AFSIM) AFSIM and air force
5-1-18 Space and Cyber M&S Support to Air Force Space Command (AFSPC), Peterson AFB
MDS is a team member on a newly awarded 5 year, $95.9M program focused on advancing the Modeling and Simulation capabilities in the areas of space and cyber for the Air Force. The Colorado Springs, Colorado based effort is an indefinite-delivery/indefinite-quantity contract to provide for objective and responsive modeling, simulation, and analysis and decision support for space and cyberspace analyses. The effort includes both development, operation and R&D application of M&S assets, and will deploy such tools as the AFSIM Framework, SEAS, STK and other M&S software based environments. Work will be performed at Peterson Air Force Base, Colorado, and is expected to be complete by May 31, 2023.
